While I am a part time brewer, I am a full-time graphic artist. Half of what I enjoy about this hobby is naming the beers and designing labels for them. Click on each label to see a larger version!

Aletimate Warrior

10/14/2011, 7:20pm
Text message from Edwin:
File this away... Warrior hopped pale or IPA. Aletimate Warrior!

This was followed by "Real Ale-merican", "Blondre the Giant", "Hop Hogan", and "Superfly Smoka", but the first was the best. Only took me a month to create an IPA brewed with Warrior hops and call it "ALETIMATE WARRIOR!!!"

Autumn 2011 Ciders
In October of 2011 I bought a gallon each of apple cider and cherry/apple blended cider from Cherry Hill Orchard in Lancaster.

I also bought Nottingham yeast and fermented the crap out of them!
I've been wanting to design something in the 40's pin-up style for some time now. Once I came up with the names, the images practically created themselves.

London Calling Mild
The beer of choice in British pubs plus The Clash. The name, design, and style are all literally as simple as that. This is a low alcohol session beer, brewed so that many can be enjoyed over good conversation.

Punk'toberfest!
After a few years off from brewing sub-par pumpkin ales, I decided to throw my hat in the ring again. I took my great Oktoberfest ale recipe for the base and added pumpkin to the mash and pumpkin pie spice to the boil.

For the label, the name "Punk(in) toberfest" just popped in there and due to my love of punk music, the design just really drew itself. Hoping this batch would be the good Misfit in my history of pumpkin beers, I used the Misfits skull as the face of this brew.

Saison Double Batch
A collaboration between Trubbel Brewing and Dubbel Dachs, this was our first attempt at a 10 gallon batch, utilizing Jay's awesome Penrose kettle.

Jay plans to bottle-condition all 5 gallons of his split. I am going to split and keg mine using my brand new 3 gallon kegs from Rebel Brewer (best price I found on the 'net!).
My first keg is straight-up saison and the label reflects our collaboration. I used both of our brands and combined our fonts for the conveniently-rhyming name. The second keg was secondaried on 4 lbs of fresh ripe peaches.

Sucker Punch IPA
This is my tribute to the Troeg's Nugget Nectar label... It's actually my stylized hand holding a bunch of freshly harvested Cascade Hops. I wanted to produce a real life version of Troeg's fantastic vector art.

This is a redux of my Cascade Crush label... This beer was much better than that one, and much more deserving of the cool label.

Wild Wit
This thirst-quenching light summer beer is like getting crushed by a big-ass blue wave of refreshment.

So.... I went with a simple big-ass blue wave of refreshment.

"Smokey the Beer" Rauchbier
A collaboration between Ed Garrett and Dubbel Dachs, this is our take on bacon beer! Brewed for the Bacon & Brew HAHA event for LLS, this beer has none of the head-killing fat and oils, but all of the sweet, smoky, bacon flavor.

Regarding the label, this beer has been brewing ever since I saw an online picture of a beer mug made out of bacon. And what better way to exploit PSAs from the '70s than to have Smokey drink out of it. To paraphrase Jay from Trubbel Brewing, "Only beer can prevent bacon fires!"

Chocolate Peppermint Porter
This English porter was brewed with black malt, chocolate malt, and local cocoa added to the boil to give it a rich, roasty, chocolatey base. Dried peppermint was added to the end of the boil and also to the last stage of fermentation to give this beer it's cool finish.

Chocolate Peppermint Porter continues Dubbel Dachs long tradition of unusual Christmas beers. Available in 22 oz. bottles just before Christmas 2009 (if I like you).

The Lancaster Lager Series
These four lagers from Dubbel Dachs are a tribute both to Lancaster's history of brewing German lagers and to the time involved in carefully crafting a true lager.

Blackest Night Stout
This was my first time brewing a Foreign Export Stout. After tasting it and seeing how dark and delicious it was, I struggled to find a name that would capture the depth and complexity of the brew's essence...

And then I said "F it" and named it after a Green Lantern story line! GL rocks.

Endless Summer Ale
Inspired by the movie of the same name, Endless Summer Ale is intended to taste like summer. I am a big fan of the retro summer look, and I think that this design captures the summer of everyone's youth.

Watermelon Wheat v.4
Version 4 of this perennial favorite finally earns a label worth keeping. Trial and error on both the beer and the label over the years. This is definitely a refreshing summer beer and I think the label finally reflects that.

Vanilla Latte Stout
My buddy Ed approached Jay and I about making a beer for a friend's wedding. After much debate and beers, we decided on a "lady-friendly" variation of my Founder's Breakfast Stout clone. We lost the bitter dark chocolate, changed the coffee to a smoother blend, and added Madagascar vanilla bean.

I've never met Rob & Mary, but I hope that they and their guests enjoy this beer. I only had a pint, and thought it was really good. Here's the beer, on the road to Pittsburgh!

36th Birthday Maibock
Birthday Maibock is brewed annually on New Year's Eve, ghetto lagered in the garage for 8+ weeks, and tapped in time for my March 12 birthday. In '09, this beer was kicked entirely too quickly during my 35th birthday party, so in 2010 -- No party! I tend to enjoy this year's vintage.

Going forward, I will use the maibock label to commemorate the most special thing that has happened to me during the previous year. This year it was the birth of my beautiful daughter, and this is her being able to witness her first of many brew days!

3 Phils Belgian-style Quad
This beer was heavily inspired by Ommegang's incredible Three Philosophers and a baseball team's incredible rise to the top of the world.

Ryan Howard, Brad Lidge (the perfect '08 Lidge, NOT the '09 one), and Chase Utley are my 3 Phils of choice for this label.

California Dreamin' Ale
An original American creation, California Common Ales are fermented with lager yeast at ale temperatures. I brewed this in December for a little blast of summer. Graphically, I love the retro "endless summer" look... Not a whole lot more to add, so....

Facts: Cali Common was nicknamed "steam beer" because it was cooled on San Francisco rooftops in the days before refrigeration. Anchor Brewing trademarked "Steam Beer™", thus "California Common" was coined.

Trubbel Brewing Harrrrrvest Ale
I made this label for my boy Jay, who came into a few pounds of free, freshly harrrvested Nuggets and Cascades. He brewed up 10 gallons of the stuff... Pics here and here!

Regarding this label, our buddy Ed said, "That's so much like my dreams, it's scary." Jay gave it a "Totally super awesome!", followed shortly by an "AYYYYYYYE, matey!", which made this my most gaily commented on label ever!

CHAMP10N Brown Bear Ale
Cheers to the Hershey Bears, who brought home their 10th Calder Cup in 2009. I know I've got a long way to go to match their success, but I'll take my first blue ribbon anyday.

Formerly "Deez Nutz" Nut Brown Ale, "CHAMP10N" is now dressed as smooth as it drinks!

Ryan's Chocolate Orange Stout
It is known for its singularity and unusual marketing - usually at its heaviest around Christmas - Terry's Chocolate Orange is a ball of chocolate mixed with orange oil, divided into 20 "segments", and wrapped in orange-coloured foil. As the segments, when packaged, are stuck together firmly, the traditional method of getting ready to eat them is to whack it severely on a hard surface to cause the segments to separate from each other. My label is a direct reproduction of Terry's classic packaging.
Continuing Dubbel Dachs long tradition of unusual Christmas beers, Ryan's Chocolate Orange Stout aims to bring the appeal of the British chocolate orange to the palate of discriminating beer drinkers stateside. Available in 22 oz. bottles just before Christmas 2009 (if I like you).
